Spring nettle leaves are more round and soft therefore easier to digest and they contain more nutrients!
That’s why it’s important to pick the first new sprouts.
(For details of where and how to pick the nettles, how to dry them and how to make nettle tea, click HERE )
The leaf changes its shape after flowering. They become tougher and contain less nutrients because the plant uses it to grow the flowers and seeds.
Good news - Don’t worry if you missed the first new shoots. Later in the summer even after the plant is cut/damaged/eaten it will grow new leaves which are as full of goodness as the spring ones!
So the picking of new shoots can continue from spring through untill late autumn!
You can also use the nettle seeds as well!
Did you know??? Only female nettle plants can produce nettle seeds
You can eat nettle seeds raw or make homemade cosmetics.
